I was born and raised in Rhyl, Wales. On leaving school I was employed as an electrician for the North Wales Electricity Board until 1972 when I went to Bangor Normal College to train as a teacher. Later I obtained a BA Honours degree.

In 1975 I became a teacher of Welsh at Rhyl High School, remaining there until early retirement in 1991.

For many years have undertaken genealogical researches not only into the extended Bartley families, but also on a professional basis as researcher trading as WaleSearch.

I am married to Margaret and have two sons and four grandchildren. My interests are mountaineering (and formerly skiing), with experience in the Alps, Pyrenees, Tatras, Ireland and the mountains of Great Britain.

I am an active member of the Midland Association of Mountaineers.
I also belong to Rhyl Music Club. Not as a performer, leaving that activity to my wife who is a soprano, a member of two choirs, church organist and a teacher of the piano and organ.
